Helen & Joe's Taffy Apples

Helen & Joe's Taffy Apples

Joe was my parent's yard man when they lived in Frankfort.  He was a total character.  He would go to the nursery dump and bring back what he called his "cripples", discarded plants from the nursery and plant them.  They made these every fall.  I remember the great feeling I got when I saw them sitting there on the counter.
1  pound light brown sugar
1-14 ounce can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 Tablespoons butter
2 t. vanilla
1/2 cup white corn syrup

12 or more crisp apples
chopped walnuts

  1. Place first 5 ingredients in a large pan and cook over low heat, being careful not to burn.
  2. Bring to a boil and stir constantly when boiling, about 10 minutes.
  3. Cook until soft ball stage (230-245 degrees on a candy thermometer).
  4. Put apples on a skewer and dip into this mixture working relatively fast.
  5. Roll in chopped nuts.
  6. Set on waxed paper to cool.
