Old Fashioned Fudge

My mother used to make this and I remember my mother beating this with a wooden spoon.
It's the best fudge I've ever had!

2 cups sugar
3 T. cocoa
1/8 t. cream of tartar
2/3 cup milk
1 T. butter
1 t. vanilla
1/2 c. nuts
  1. Mix and cook to soft ball stage (239 °).
  2. Remove from heat and add 1 T. butter.
  3. Cool and add 1 t. vanilla.
  4. Beat until gloss begins to go away.
  5. Add 1/2 cups nuts and turn into a greased 9" square pan. Do this fast as it hardens quickly.
